Changing a PDF File’s Initial View Settings

Did you know that you can change how a PDF looks when it’s first opened? With Acrobat, you can alter the default magnification and layout settings for individual files. To do so:

  1. Open a PDF file and go to File > Properties > Initial View
  2. Here you can use the dropdown menus to increase or decrease the magnification or change the page layout.
  3. Below we have changed our magnification to 200%
  4. Now if you click OK, save your PDF, close it and reopen it, you’ll see that the magnification has changed.
  5. Remember that we have only changed the initial view settings for this PDF file.
  6. To change the settings for Acrobat in general go to Edit > Preferences (or Acrobat > Preferences on Mac) > Page Display.
  7. You should also note that any initial view settings on an individual file (step 1) will override Acrobat’s general preferences (step 6).
