Adobe Error ‘1714: The Older Version of Adobe Reader Cannot be Removed’ When Installing Adobe Reader 8.1

The Adobe Error 1714: The older version of Adobe Reader cannot be removed. Contact you technical support group error when you attempt to install Reader 8 on a windows XP or Vista machine can be fixed, fairly easily, with the solution below.

 

  1. Download The Windows Install Cleanup Utility from Microsoft by clicking the link below

  2. Install the Windows Install Cleanup Utility. Either select run after downloading or find where you downloaded the file to and double click on it. The file name is MSICUU2.exe, short for MicroSoft Installer CleanUp Utility 2.
  3. Run the Windows Install Cleanup Utility. After installing it should be located in your ‘all programs’ list. Go to Start then All Programs then click on Windows Install Cleanup Utility
  4. Find the version of Reader you are unable to remove, select it and then hit ‘Remove’

  6. You should keep in mind that you should only use the Windows Install Cleanup Utility if you are unable to remove the program through add/remove programs. Also, this doesn’t uninstall the program but allows Adobe Reader to overwrite the past version. That being said, if you get a 1714 error; this is how you take care of it.

  1. Have used Windows Install Cleanup, but there are no Adobe entries to clean. Searched registry and cleaned all Adobe, Acrobat and installer entries for version 6 and 7. I cleaned out all adobe directories. The full version of 8 I just bought still won’t install. Seems like I just wasted a lot of money!

  2. This can be a tricky one. There are probably additional registry entries blocking the installation. The 1714 error is the same issue as 1635. If you’re comfortable with the registry, you can take out the additional keys listed in this document:
