Form Data not saving in Adobe Reader 8.1?

Well Folks it appears that Reader 8.1 is not entirely compatible with forms made in LiveCycle Designer 7.x. Although this doesn’t always happen it is happening enough to create quite the problem. It seems that when using Acrobat/Reader 8.0 or 8.1 that form information is not always saved properly.

Adobe describes the problem as such:

  • After entering data into a form and saving it, the user encounters problems upon reopening the saved form, saved data is lost.
  • The user experiences problems with drop-down lists , radio buttons, and/or check boxes where, during form interactions, the selected item is forgotten or behaves as though there is no selected value.

Adobe plans on releasing a patch for this in October 2007, until then we have a few suggestions to help you avoid this issue.

  1. Uninstall Reader 8.1 then download Reader 7.09 for Windows and install that
  2. Use a different PDF Viewer such as Foxit.
  3. Follow the below steps to resolve the issue via a registry edit. Remember to always back up your registry before making any changes.

Fix Reader 8.1 Form Issue

  1. Start>Run> type “regedit” and hit enter or click on ‘ok’
  2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\8.0\

    Reader 8.0 Registry edit

  3. Choose Edit > New > Key. Type AVPrivate for the name, and click Enter.

    AV Private

  4. With this new AVPrivate key highlighted, choose Edit > New > DWord Value

    DWORD Value

Type bForceXFADirectRender for the name, and click Enter.

    BForce

This should do the trick until Adobe releases a fix for this bug.
