Speed Up Adobe Reader 8.0

ArsGeek has a simple tip for significantly speeding up Adobe Reader 8.0.

Please note: this seems to break Adobe Reader 8.1, so if you have that version (the most current at the time of this writing), don’t try this tip.

When you open a document in Adobe Reader, sometimes you get the error:

Please wait while the document is being prepared.

This means that Reader is indexing the document and can sometimes take several minutes. This can be really annoying for all kinds of reasons. (Imagine this happening during a presentation).

Here is what ArsGeek suggests:

To remove this ‘feature’, simply navigate to your %Program Files%\Adobe\Reader 8.0\reader\plug_ins folder, and rename (delete, copy elsewhere) the ‘accessability.api’ file. The same file exists, but in slightly different locations, in older version of Acrobat Reader.

You may get a dialog box the next time you open a document complaining about this, but you should only have to shoo that away once and you are all set.
