Using Bates Numbering in Adobe Acrobat

You can use Bates numbering in Acrobat for legal documents and other PDF files. Bates number is similar to normal page numbering except that every page is given a unique ID. To add Bates numbers in Acrobat:

  1. Open Acrobat and go to Advanced > Document Processing > Bates numbering
  2. Click Add, which brings up the Bates Numbering menu
  3. Click browse and choose one or more PDF files
  4. In the Files Selected area, make sure the PDF files are in the correct order. Bates numbers will be applied to the PDF files in the order you specify.
  5. Click next to bring up the Add Header and Footer menu.
  6. Click in the one of the six boxes depending on where you want the Bates numbers to appear. We chose Center Header Text.
  7. Click Insert Bates Number, choose your numbering options, and click OK twice.
  8. If you ever need to remove Bates numbering, just go to Advanced > Document Processing > Bates Numbering > Remove and then follow the prompts.
