Working with the Article Tool
Sometimes you have PDF files that contain multiple columns, which may be hard to read without a lot of vertical and horizontal scrolling. In this case, you may want to use Acrobat’s article tool to help readers move easily through the document. To use the article tool:
- Go to Tools > Advanced Editing > Article Tool.
- Click and drag a rectangle around the first section you want people to read. This would normally be your first column.
- You’ll see a black box appear titled 1-1
- Drag rectangles around your second and third columns. Here is how my PDF looks at this point:

- To try out the article tool, go to View > Navigation Panels > Articles.
- On the Article Panel double click on your article (currently the article is called Untitled, but you can change that).
- After double clicking on your article, Acrobat will zoom in on your first column.
- After looking at column 1, click on the page to move to column 2 and 3.
- If you save your PDF, now your readers can use the Article Panel to move through the document just as you did.
