Working with the Article Tool

Sometimes you have PDF files that contain multiple columns, which may be hard to read without a lot of vertical and horizontal scrolling. In this case, you may want to use Acrobat’s article tool to help readers move easily through the document. To use the article tool:

  1. Go to Tools > Advanced Editing > Article Tool.
  2. Click and drag a rectangle around the first section you want people to read. This would normally be your first column.
  3. You’ll see a black box appear titled 1-1
  4. Drag rectangles around your second and third columns. Here is how my PDF looks at this point:

  5. To try out the article tool, go to View > Navigation Panels > Articles.
  6. On the Article Panel double click on your article (currently the article is called Untitled, but you can change that).
  7. After double clicking on your article, Acrobat will zoom in on your first column.
  8. After looking at column 1, click on the page to move to column 2 and 3.
  9. If you save your PDF, now your readers can use the Article Panel to move through the document just as you did.
